12.02.2016 Waterborne wood stains with improved early-water resistance Back Tools Bookmark Share Open-pore wood stains are widely used in DIY market to recondition wooden terraces or garden furniture. The time of application on exterior wood is limited by outdoor weather conditions as the stain will be washed out if it starts raining shortly after application. The early-water resistance of an applied resin system can be adjusted by chemical modification of the resin structure, by refinement of the resin and binder formulation and by the selection of siccatives in the wood stain formulation. All three options are explained using the example of a new generation of copolymer resin emulsions based on natural oils. The copolymers have lowest viscosities to achieve high penetration properties and color intensification effects in combination with very good early-water resistance and high weather resistance. Application tests and results are presented as well as cobalt-free starting formulations.
