Use of transmission technique to adjust the tinting strength and its influence on the variability of the final color(?E)

Currently, one of the biggest challenges in the paint industry at a global level remains the adjustment of the final colour, resulting from the mixture of pigment dispersions that present variability in the Tinting Strength and that causes the need for adjustment to obtain the specified colour standard. The low sensitivity of the current method of reading this property via dry reflection directly impacts the variability of the final color (?E). To solve this problem, this work proposes the use of an innovative light transmission technique, which presents an excellent R&R value, high sensitivity and low cycle time, to control and adjust the Tinting Strength. In this way, the technique allows the narrowing of the specification range, ensuring less batch-to-batch variability and allowing the reduction of the variable costs of the formulations. As a result, paints produced from these transmission-adjusted dispersions eliminate the need for final colour adjustment. The study uses four different pigment dispersions to formulate specific colors, which are adjusted by transmission technique, and the final colors are evaluated by reflection (CIELAB coordinates).
