04.03.2025 The versatile role of colloidal silica in sustainable surface protection Back Tools Bookmark Share The presentation explores the sustainable applications of water-based colloidal silica within various coating systems. Colloidal silica's role in enhancing surface properties, including dirt pick-up resistance and hot-block performance, is discussed, particularly in its function as a co-binder. The material's effectiveness is analyzed in both non-resin and resin-based systems. For non-resin-based applications, the focus is on its integration into sol-gel ceramic coatings and sol-silicate paints. In resin-based systems, the presentation delves into its contribution to corrosion resistance, emphasizing the key features required for anti-corrosion coatings. Results from performance tests on PUD (polyurethane dispersion) systems, applied to both galvanized and non-galvanized steel substrates, are presented, supported by images and formulation data. The presentation concludes with a look at future systems that will be tested to further expand the applications of colloidal silica in advanced coating technologies.
