The next level of performance for acrylic binders for trim paints

Solvent-borne alkyd coatings which emerged at the beginning of the 20th century are still broadly used in Europe and appreciated by professional painters due to their long open time and superior dry film appearance, despite their environmental and health impacts. We have developed a new water-borne acrylic binder that combines the desirable attributes of existing waterborne acrylic coatings (i.e., durability, low yellowing, and reduced environmental impact) with open time and gloss potential comparable with that observed with alkyd coatings. Paints prepared with this new acrylic binder also demonstrate a remarkable application feel similar to that found with alkyds. Such alkyd-like properties resulting from water-borne latex were achieved through optimization of particle morphology, molecular weight and colloidal stabilization. This produced an excellent balance of the wet and dry film properties.
