02.12.2021 Silane-modified silicas as versatile additives in radiation-cured formulations Back Tools Bookmark Share Radiation-cured coatings offer a variety of benefits including: ambient and fast cure, low emissions, and enhanced physical properties as compared to traditional thermoset coatings. A common issue of these formulations is the incorporation of matting agents such as micronized precipitated silica. Due to the inherent thixotropic nature of the silica and relatively high loadings used, radiation-cured formulas can experience a dramatic increase of viscosity, which limits applicability. This paper will highlight a new class of functionalized silica additives that demonstrates improved viscosity performance (even at high loading levels) while maintaining matting efficiency in radiation-cured formulations.
