Reduce film thickness without compromising film performance by incorporating poyester diol resin modifiers

The benefits of reducing film thickness of automotive and aerospace coatings include reduced cost, reduced weight which also translates to reduced fuel consumption and reduced overall carbon footprint. The concept is good provided performance of the coating is not compromised when the thickness is reduced. Modification of melamine and isocyanate crosslinked coating systems with new and unique polyester diol resins can help achieve this objective. This work demonstrates improved properties of systems modified with these unique polyester diol resins which could allow for thinner coating applications. In addition to enhancing film performance, these polyester polyols can efficiently reduce formulation viscosity which also translates to lower VOC and further reduction of the total carbon footprint.
