PVDF-based dispersions for improving performance of low VOC architectural coatings

Water-based PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride)-acrylic dispersions at a 70:30 weight ratio have been shown to meet the highest weathering standard for OEM architectural coatings on metal substrates (American Architectural Manufacturers Association (AAMA) 2605) when used in conjunction with weatherable pigments. PVDF-acrylic dispersion-based coatings can also be formulated to be field-applied by professional contractors to refresh the appearance of iconic buildings, while providing a similar level of weathering performance. These formulations can be costly, however, limiting their use in standard architectural coatings. In this paper, we demonstrate the performance benefits of blending PVDF-acrylic dispersions with 100% acrylic latex (up to 20 wt% PVDF based on resin solids). This pathway eliminates the use of HALS, fluorosurfactants, and even photo-initiators, all of which have endured some regulatory scrutiny in the past decade, while allowing for a cost-effective route toward superior performance.
