PFAS free additives for a more sustainable world

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are widely used chemicals known for their highly valued properties such as their exceptional water- and oil-repellent properties, as well as their remarkable durability under extreme conditions. In the context of defoaming, PFAS-containing additives offer key advantages, including outstanding defoaming performance across various systems or excellent wetting properties even at low dosages. PTFE-based wax additives demonstrate superior abrasion resistance and exceptional temperature stability. However, the persistence of PFAS is a significant concern. Often referred to as "forever chemicals," they do not degrade easily and are bioaccumulative, meaning they accumulate in the food chain and can concentrate in the human body over time. Studies have shown that PFAS contamination extends to rainwater, drinking water, and groundwater. As a leading additive supplier with a strong commitment to research and development, BYK anticipated the need for PFAS-free alternatives years before a regulatory timeline was established. We successfully developed new structures that mimic the formerly unique properties of PFAS-containing compounds. Through extensive testing, we developed a family of PFAS-free additives that meet all required performance standards.
