05.05.2017 Past and future of universal colorants in coatings Back Tools Bookmark Share Universal colorants can be defined as waterborne colorants for the tinting of wb and sb paint formulations. In the past and still APEs are used to produce universal colorants. In the meantime, replacements for this technology are available. The lecture will discuss these replacements and give advantages and disadvantages. It will introduce a new chemical structure that has been developed to stabilize difficult pigments in universal colorants. The lecture will give also new possibilities to overcome problems with the compatibility of universal colorants in solvent borne alkyd paints. The use of compatibilizers will be discussed in detail. The working mechanisms of newly developed compatibilizers will be explained. Finally, the lecture will give an outlook about the possible use of universal colorants in industrial coatings and even in solvent borne 2-pack coatings.
