Optimum TiO2 particle size by combining regular dispersing agents and alkanolamines

Alkanolamines, such as 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol (AMP) and 2-amino-2-ethyl-1,3-propanediol (AEPD), are commonly used as key stabilizing agents in a wide range of waterborne paint formulations. The versatile performance of these Alkanolamines, and their synergistic effect with a wide range of commercial dispersing agents, can help formulators achieve optimum particle size distribution of titanium dioxide, which leads to ideal light scattering that drives dry film opacity. This research evaluates different blends of dispersing agents and alkanolamines to explore the evolution of particle size during the dispersion, as well as analyze the isoelectric point as a function of the pH, adsorption of alkanolamines at pigment surface, and the evolution of slurry rheology to highlight optimum combinations of chemistries. This comprehensive work should help formulators to improve final dry film performances.
