Optimisation of coating layers with TeraHertz measurements

 
As Automotive manufacturers recover from Covid and with the transition to new manufacturing solutions to address the change to EV, then greater importance is being placed on ensuring quality of coatings & finish on vehicles. In order to optimize paint layers/usage the adoption of terahertz solutions is growing due to its advantages over traditional methods: ? Ability to rationalize & measure individual film builds on multi-layer finish ? Non-Contact ? Ability to read curved surfaces ? Non-interpolative readings ? Ability to read on both metallic & plastic panels This submission will compares the constraints of typical measurement techniques and present terahertz based solutions as a way forward. A simplified explanation of what Terahertz is and how the solution works in an automotive plant. Examples will be shared taken from an Automotive installation with automated robot measurements being taken and resolved down to a few microns. This system opens up new opportunities for manufacturers to optimize production by eliminating waste, ensuring quality control of both Tier 1 suppliers and their own manufacturing processes.
