17.05.2019 One step closer to replacement of solvent-borne coatings for 1K corrosion protection Back Tools Bookmark Share The annual cost of corrosion to the European economy is estimated to be 600 billion Euros, 15-35 percent of which could be saved by implementing corrosion prevention best practices. Application of 1- or 2- component protective coatings is one of the main practices used for corrosion prevention. Whereas in general in the paint industry there is a shift to water-borne technologies, solvent-borne systems are still the preferred choice for anti-corrosive metal protection, because corrosion prevention by water-borne coatings is a particularly tough challenge, for well-known reasons. Omnova Solutions has innovative water-based binders, developed on Hydrophobic Dispersion Technology for the effective protection of metal. This paper describes the design of these polymers and their resulting performance, when used in Direct-to-Metal formulations and anticorrosion primers. Specific attention will be paid to the impact of critical formulation ingredients, such as anticorrosive pigments, and their interest for the development of 1K water-based industrial coatings.
