13.04.2017 Novel water-borne phenalkamine curing agent for low VOC protective and industrial coatings Back Tools Bookmark Share A novel water-borne phenalkamine has been developed via a unique technology that stabilizes hydrophobic phenalkamine in water without helps of co-solvents. This zero VOC water-borne phenalkamine inherits fast cure at low temperatures, and also provides good compatibility with various epoxy resins that results in broad latitude in formulating low VOC coatings. This paper presents the latest performance results of protective coatings formulated with the water-borne phenalkamine. The low VOC primers showed quick hardness development and good water and chemical resistance. The fast cure properties enabled the primers to be topcoated with polyurethane within thirty minutes without losing good performance. The primers also exhibited excellent adhesion to various metal substrates that led to good corrosion resistance. The initial application studies in Zinc-rich primers will be reported.
