08.11.2024 Novel water-borne acrylic technology for sustainable basecoat formulations Back Tools Bookmark Share Allnex developed two new binders for water-borne basecoat formulations that fit the scope of sustainability development goals for coating systems, like VOC reduction, resource efficiency and use of safer materials. The first newly designed polyacrylate dispersion enables formulators to reduce the VOC level of the metallic water-borne basecoat without any sacrifices on performance. Smart design of the binder leads to improved response to the organic solvent present and as a result, the rheology of the coating formulation enables an excellent balance between spray viscosity and storage stability. The application results clearly demonstrate the advantage of the new development compared to the current products in the market. Based on similar technology, a second new binder was developed with enhanced adhesion to OEM interior plastic substrates like polycarbonate and ABS. This paper will provide insights in the synthetic routes used to produce both new acrylic binders and will demonstrate the performance advantages when applied in metallic basecoats.
