Novel high performance oxidatively cured catalyst to maintain coating performance in low-VOC formulations

Today's VOC restrictions have pushed resin suppliers to provide alkyd resins with higher solid content, consequently posing challenges to formulators to find the balance between lowering VOCs and providing workable paint properties such as dry time and wrinkle-free appearance. This paper will present a novel, high performance, oxidatively cured catalyst that provides a sustainable, efficient solution for the drying of high solids, long oil alkyd resins. This unique technology can outperform typical metal carboxylates in standard and adverse conditions across multiple resin platforms, even when dry film thickness is higher than intended or purposeful for the application. This new technology can eliminate the need for complex drier packages and potentially reduce the overall cost of the coating. Today's next generation of oxidatively cured systems demand novel drier technology; this molecule is an ideal solution for the continuing challenges of VOC reduction as it provides improved performance over unsustainable alternatives.
