21.01.2016 Novel bio-based polyols, setting new frontiers in high performance polyurethane coatings Back Tools Bookmark Share Polyurethanes have been used for many years to produce highperformance materials. We expand our range of polyols with a next generation, to meet the industry need to exceed the current performance levels. The novel polyols exhibit the intrinsic properties of polycarbonate polyols of durability and extreme performance while enhancing the product sustainability. These polyols are based on natural oils with a branched non-crystalline structure, which enhances wetting of the substrate and offers (low temperature) flexibility. Increasing the flexibility would normally imply a loss of surface hardness. These novel polyols however exhibit flexibility while having higher surface hardness and excellent strength. The hydrocarbon character imparts water repellency and affinity for a wide range of substrates, including plastics and wood. Furthermore, the bio-based novel polyols offer a unique combination of hydrolytic, thermo-oxidative and UV stability, which is highly relevant for demanding applications using polyurethane dispersions like industrial coatings, sportswear and automotive applications.
