New silicone-resin-based integral water repellent for cementitious materials

Protecting cement-based construction against water absorption is key to prevent water-induced degradation. Silicone-based post treatment water repellent - WR- is an industry-proven method to protect cementitious material. Silane-based emulsion or powder have been used for the last 10 years as integral WR but they are known to impact cement hydration. A new generation of integral WR based on silicone resin and innovative emulsion technology has been developed. It enables to protect cementitious materials against water ingress with yet very limited impact on cement hydration processes and mechanical properties. This technology will be illustrated in mortar and fiber reinforced cement board. Performance data (water ingress, mechanical properties) as well as impact on cement hydration will be illustrated. A model explaining the behaviour of this new WR in cement mixture will be shared.
