Even if only one of the important protective properties like UV- or corrosion protection can be improved through newly introduced functional particles, this will be a big step forward for the durability and performance of protective coatings. Material and maintenance cost savings, that are generated from the lower applied coating thickness and/or from the simplified application processes are additionally possible. In the proposed concept, new nanoscale platelet pigments with different functionalization were used to improve the protective properties of coatings. The obtained coating properties were characterized and compared with "state of the art" functional pigment counterparts.
