07.12.2021 Mineral extenders for improved opacity and anti-corrosion properties in powder coatings Back Tools Bookmark Share The choice of the resin system defines the basic performances of a powder coating. Mineral extenders are added to these coatings primarily to lower the overall raw material cost without influencing the powder coating properties. Fine and ultra-fine ground carbonates, as well as natural and synthetic barium sulfate are traditional mineral extenders used for powder coatings. Our studies, performed in Polyester/Primid and Hybrid epoxy/polyester resin systems, have demonstrated that other minerals can enhance the powder coatings properties. The addition of natural minerals such as hydrous kaolin, calcined clay and wollastonite are beneficial to anti-corrosion properties and TiO2 extension, hence further reducing the formulation cost while maintaining the optical, mechanical and powder properties of powder coatings.
