13.04.2017 Low gloss, low viscosity, clear polyaspartic coatings based on aggregated treated silica (ATS) Back Tools Bookmark Share Two-component polyaspartic coatings are used in the flooring, automotive, and protective industries because of their advantageous mechanical and chemical resistance compared to other polyurethane formulations. Some industrial and architectural flooring require durability and processability while giving designers flexibility to change the gloss level. Given the low solvent concentration found in polyaspartic coatings, gloss reduction to achieve matte appearance is difficult to realize with conventional organic and inorganic matting agents. We discuss a new matting additive based on aggregated treated silica (ATS) for matting polyaspartic coatings. We demonstrated gloss levels of 7 at 20 degrees with 7wt% ATS additive with viscosities of 2.5Pa-s at 0.5s-1. Moreover, the cured coating containing 7wt% ATS maintains performance and its optical clarity compared to the pure formulation.
