Latest photoinitiator developments

With growing importance of photopolymerization in industry new challenges arise. Three possibilities to overcome current hurdles were in the focus of our recent academic research and the results are now close to be ready for the market. ? Tetra acyl tin compounds as novel visible light PIs allow curing in highly filled systems with affordable and save light sources up to 532 nm. They impress with high reactivity, good bleaching behavior and low toxicity. ? Aliphatic nontoxic PIs as alternative to classical aromatic Type II systems contribute to the increasing legislative pressure in the field of food package and mDaniel Bomzeedicine products regarding possibly harmful leachables like benzaldehyde. ? Cationic PIs (photoacid generators) face an increasing demand due to the inherent advantages of cationic polymerization over radical polymerization like oxygen-insensitivity and the dark curing effect. Here a non-heavy metal containing compound with high reactivity towards e.g. BADGE resins were developed.
