Isocyanate-free polyhydroxy urethanes for water-borne coating applications

Polyhydroxy Urethans possess the potential to complement the portfolio of PUR coatings and related applications. We describe a promising procedure to obtain waterborne isocyanate-free urethane comprising polymers and their use for coating applications. The synthesis of the polyhydroxy urethanes in solvents bases on a charge stabilization procedure leading to stable water based polyhydroxy urethane dispersions up to around 40 wt.% solid content. Raw material properties, film formation, and coating properties of around 0.1 mm thickness were also explored. First results focus on coatings for wood applications. Interestingly, the hydroxyl offers several possibilities to modify this raw material expanding the availability of this interesting material in coating sciences.
