Isocyanate-free 1K moisture curing protective coatings based on hydrophobic hybrid organic-inorganic binders

Copolymers of highly branched aliphatic vinyl ester monomers and trimethoxysilane based monomers like methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (MPTMS) or vinyltrimethoxysilane (VTMS) are versatile binders for 1K moisture curing protective topcoats. With the appropriate catalyst system, those methoxysilane-based resins cure effectively under ambient moisture and temperature conditions to form highly crosslinked coating films. The strong hydrophobic character of these copolymers offers a range of attractive advantages to design higher performance materials compared to similar but more hydrophilic systems based on (meth)acrylate comonomers. The paint formulation of these resins with more hydrophobic ingredients, such as pigments, solvents, and additives, reduces the tendency of paints to absorb ambient humidity upon storage and therefore, prevents premature curing in the cans. In addition, the higher hydrophobicity of the cured coating films ensures improved durability, anticorrosion and even anti-graffiti performances.
