Investigation of the interactions occurring in 2K PUR water-borne formulations via DGU measurem

Understanding the main phenomena occurring during the formulation, film formation and drying of two-component polyurethane waterborne coatings is a challenging task. Indeed, the presence of both polyacrylate binder and polyisocyanate hardener coupled with the wide range of reactions possible hamper the straightforward analysis of the system. We recently dedicated some efforts in order to examine which methods could be suitable for the investigation of 2K water-borne PUR coatings. The study of the aqueous formulation proved to be possible using Density Gradient UItracentrifugation (DGU) measurements. Starting from this finding, formulations based on commercial products as well as model compounds have been investigated. The impact of each component on the interactions has been consequently studied and correlated with the pot-life of the corresponding formulations.
