High performance acrylic polyol dispersions for 2K water-borne DTM coatings

 
Among the environmentally friendly direct-to-metal (DTM) WB coatings, 1K acrylate technology has been widely popular for its ease of usage. But for ultimate high performance that combines excellent corrosion resistance coupled with good chemical resistance and glossy appearance, often multicoat systems are used i.e. corrosion resistant primer with 2K WB Polyurethane topcoats. It had been long wish of industry to have single coating system that has optimal properties in all these directions to reduce number of layers and complexity of coating process. In this work we developed a hydroxyl functional acrylate dispersion for 2K WB polyurethane system that provides good metal protection properties combined with required topcoat performance such as chemical resistance and glossy appearance. The strategic design of the dispersion enabled us to achieve excellent metal protection properties at high gloss levels.
