Functional coatings in a sustainable world

 
Traditionally, coatings are applied for aesthetics and durability, but nowadays we have the third aspect: functionality. The functional use of coatings has become an established part of new product development. Many different functionalities are being claimed in the market, but the underlying technologies are limited in amount. The types of functional coatings can be categorized in several ways. In this presentation, they are split in five categories to distinguish between the mode of activity. Sustainability considerations could give restrictions to practical use of functional coatings, e.g. extra layer thickness or specific ingredients could negatively contribute. It could however also create possibilities for new customer propositions. For instance, thermal management opportunities could have great potential. Open innovation with start-up companies or with universities is the way forward to bringing these new insights towards products. In this presentation, not only the potential but also limitations of new technologies will be addressed and a perspective on the potential future of paints and coatings will be given.
