Fully bio-based versatile binder for architectural coatings

 
Synthomer is resolutely focused on sustainability and has defined a roadmap for making improvement around three pillars: Products, Operations, and People. Hence, development of new polymer is part of this commitment, and we investigate many routes in order to reduce carbon footprint of end-use products with bio-based solutions. A new versatile binder with 100%-bio-based composition and -solids has been developed to enable our customers to formulate solvent-borne paints with lower VOC content and improved carbon footprint. In parallel, this polymer can be a surfactant free alternative to water-borne dispersions in water-based architectural coatings. For this development, Design of Experiments (DoE) was used to optimize key properties of the binder like color index, workable viscosity at 100% solids and different levels of bio-based content. In this paper, we present our polymer design approach and application results in architectural coatings formulations with a comparison with standard technology binders.
