Flame Retardants Fundamentals

 
This introductory course will explain why flame retardants are a key technology for fire safety by reducing the flammability of materials or as a key ingredient in coatings which can act as heat and flame barriers. The basic chemical groups and mechanisms of flame retardants will be discussed. For the application in practice, the required and standardized fire tests are essential. Trends in fire safety requirements as well as issues and concerns about flame retardants will be touched. Finally, a short overview of flame retardants in coatings will be given.
