07.04.2017 Engineered calcined kaolin for TiO2 extension in decorative matt paints Back Tools Bookmark Share Due to on-going pressure in the TiO2 market, paint producers are still interested in optimising formulations to reduce cost and improve environmental footprint by using the right combination of extenders. This paper will report on the use of a new engineered calcined kaolin and the advantages brought in terms of opacity performance without detrimental effects on mechanical properties, allowing TiO2 savings compared to standard calcined kaolin. Statistically designed experiments were conducted to monitor and visualise the effect of both TiO2 and calcined clay levels on optical and mechanical properties of high PVC matt paints. The DOE tool offers several solutions for constant opacity or for optimum performance of chosen paint parameters. Overall we will show the amount of TiO2 extension possible depending on constraints on opacity, colour, scrub or other measured properties.
