Durable matte: Film-forming binder technology to drive performance in low sheen paints

There is an unmet need in the decorative coatings market to develop a paint system which can combine the step out resistance properties of a higher sheen paint such as semi-gloss or satin with the appearance and application benefits of a flat/matte paint. Durable matte resin is a film forming binder technology which can achieve these competing needs, i.e. a flat/matte appearance with a semi-gloss type durability, through a simplified formulations approach. This study utilized design of experiments and high throughput methodologies in its approach to investigate structure-property relationships between multiple variables. Predictive models were developed for each resistance property such as burnish, scrub, and stain to estimate the trends and associations with the variables. Optimization of multiple responses based on predictive models to achieve desired performance balance were validated. Large scale application trials by professional contractors were conducted to validate application benefits of this technology.
