05.05.2017 Durability with the 2-in-1 microcapsule Back Tools Bookmark Share Contemporary biocide-containing coatings often lose the protective ability rapidly due to fast diffusional leakage of the biocides. The purpose of this research project is to prolong the durability of coated materials through design of microcapsule release systems that offer efficient surface protection against micro-organic growth over an extended period of time. Our previous work has revealed an effective release from polymeric microcapsules. We here present a concept for a new generation of microcapsule release systems where the objectives have been to design cost-effective and pigment-like microcapsules of titanium dioxide, with controllable release rate for biocides, and to formulate release systems with these microcapsules in water-borne paint for house faþades. Several formulation strategies are presented as well as diffusion-controlled and time-dependent leakage rates.
