Development of core-shell acrylic polymers for multi-surface coatings

The development of binders for multi-surface applications is a difficult task since the adhesion to different energy surfaces is not straightforward. In this work we have studied acrylic core-shell lattices suitable for wood, metal and plastic surfaces, while exhibiting high hydrophobicity for exterior applications. A careful balance of the core and shell polymers´ compositions and a suitable self-crosslinking system were key parameters to achieve a low MFFT with excellent blocking resistance, while keeping a good elasticity. High performance is thus achieved with a low VOC requirement. The crosslinking system works in conjunction with a wet adhesion functionality to give excellent multi-surface adhesion properties. Additionally, high hydrophobicity is also given by the use of VeoVa10 monomer. Results on exterior applications up to three years show excellent weathering properties.
