05.03.2025 Developing a new AMPP standard on utilizing sustainability scorecards to quantitatively analyse the sustainability impact of paint systems Back Tools Bookmark Share Environmental product declarations (EPDs) are widely used to quantify the environmental impact of a particular product. However, coatings are commonly used in a multi-product system. EPDs for a single product in the system may not adequately quantify the environmental impact of the full system in the context that it is being used. Using a paint system approach, calculated by area, gives improved insight to the applied system, and makes it easier to use in the paint industry, compared to individual product declarations based on weight of products. To fill this gap, AMPP (Association for Materials Protection and Performance) is developing a sustainability scorecard standard that can be used to evaluate the environmental impact of a coating system. Elements under consideration for the scorecard include embodied CO2e, embodied water, CO2e downstream, paint consumption, durability, product hazard, chemical safety, and VOC content. This presentation will review the concept of the scorecard, provide updates on the status of the standard under development, and show how industry representatives can get involved in the standards development process.
