Bio-MPA: the bio-based performance booster for alkyd coatings

"Coatings are needed everywhere and always, but coatings are not 100% sustainable. At end-of-life coatings become waste & release CO2, since recycling is very difficult. Therefore bio-based coatings are necessary, and this is a #1 priority for many coating companies. Alkyd coatings are increasingly popular among others because of their high % bio-based and their ability to go-to-market in a water based formulation. The problem is a specific ingredient, the aromatic, which is a bottleneck to create 100% renewable alkyd coatings. Up to now these aromatics are only fossil based. Now finally a biobased replacement has entered the market. Relement has developed technology for an unique renewable solution to replace fossil based PA (Phthalic anhydride) which is called bio-MPA (3-methylphthalic anhydride). Bio-MPA will be a gamechanger in the coatings sector, since it is a first of kind that actually is a near-drop-in solution for fossil PA. Recent research by Relement will be showing how to overcome some of the re-formulation challenges and highlight exciting performance benefits, when using bio-MPA. Relement will also be showing these performance benefits for the first time, at ECS! Not only a more sustainable coating, Relement will show important performance benefits over conventional alkyd products as well. "
