Benchmarking antisoiling coatings for solar applications under real conditions in Saudi Arabia

The yield performance of PV systems is determined by the transparency of the cover glass used. In particular, the adherence of dirt, dust and aerosol particles can lead to significant losses in performance. State of the art PV systems are equipped with antireflective coatings which are subject to extreme conditions in desert areas, since they were not designed for such harsh conditions and therefore it is a major challenge over the anticipated years of operation and maintenance. We will demonstrate the feasibility and competitiveness of antisoiling coatings with antireflective effect by showing the results of a benchmark test where fifteen different coatings provided by participants from the industry and research organizations had to show their performance in 8 different locations within Saudi Arabia during one year of evaluation. This recognition can lead to significant cost reductions in the operation of solar power plants in arid regions.
