24.05.2025 Alternative to PFTE texturing Agent in powder coatings Back Tools Bookmark Share Keeping up with latest challenges to formulate sustainable powder coatings while at the same time being compliant with actual, as well as upcoming regulatory demands, can be a tough challenge. Finding suitable alternatives to PTFE structuring agents for powder coatings is currently one of those demanding ventures. PTFE has been the go-to product for creating fine and coarse textured coatings with a wide variety of surface finishes. Depending on the texture of the coating - uneven surfaces, irregular sandblasting, or even welding joints can be partially covered up. So unappealing raw parts can be transformed into objects with an attractive appearance, while at the same time making them resistant to wear, scratches, and all kinds of harmful environmental impacts. This study reviews a range of additive technologies that can influence the surface structure of powder coatings. Comparing current market standards with different technologies as alternatives for PFTE containing products, this evaluation highlights the new additive's ability to offer a surface texturing as a next best alternative to PTFE or PTFE-containing products. The innovative approach offers a promising long-term solution that can maintain important surface properties while possibly reducing potential negative environmental and health impacts. Key powder coating performance attributes, such as adhesion, impact resistance and durability will be highlighted in this performance benchmarking offering a promising outlook for powder coating formulators.
