Accelerating functional minerals development for architectural coatings using High Throughput Experimentation approach

High Throughput Experimentation technology is being adapted by companies in the coatings sector to meet important and growing challenges. Architectural coatings formulations contain many different ingredients-resins, additives, pigments, fillers, catalysts, solvents, co-solvents, water, etc. Exploring all the possible combinations for a given formulation is therefore impossible. However, using the High Throughput Technology combined with the statistical Design of Experimentation allows to gain significant time in innovation, product development and customer support. It can be used to develop raw materials such as functional minerals to optimize paints with an important reduction of time-to-market, chance of success and cost savings. The presentation aims to show how the use of digitalization in architectural coatings can be complementary to the laboratory work. Comparative case studies focusing on optimization of formulations using calcium carbonates will be presented to show the benefits of HTE. A particular attention will be given to the optimization of titanium dioxide content in water based paints, substituted with various types of calcium carbonates.
