WORLD OF COLOUR

Since prehistoric times carbon blacks are used in paintings, traditionally produced by charring organic materials together. While the majority is now industrially produced, to this day, some traditional production methods prevail. The names of carbon blacks stem from traditional production. Ivory black was produced by charring ivory or bones, while grapes vines and stems were charred for vine black. For lamp black soot from oil lamps was used.
