Chitosan is a fibrous material. It is made from the chitin shells of shrimp and other crustaceans or insects by treating them with an alkaline substance, such as sodium hydroxide. Shuzen Ni et al. presented an enzymatic method for functionalising chitosan as a coating on Kraft paper sheet. The derivative significantly improved the hydrophobicity and wet strength compared to pure chitosan.
