Contrary to popular belief, the Statue Of Liberty was not painted on the outside. Finished in 1886, the New York landmark is coated in a layer of copper that, over time, has oxidated. When the statue was restored in 1984, however, seven layers of paint on the inside of the metal framing and two tar-based top coats were found. The originally green top coat was replaced with a copper colour.
