The IEA developed a second scenario, the "Sustainable Development" scenario. The latter assumes that the existing political intentions are being pursued and that the sustainability goals are being met. In this scenario, the oil demand will soon reach its maximum and decrease to 67 mb/d by 2040. Currently one third of petrochemical oil is used for other purposes than energy generation .
