NMP has a harmonised classification as toxic for reproduction and may damage the unborn child. It is therefore a CMR substance. Furthermore, it causes eye and skin irritation and may cause respiratory irritation. In 2011, NMP was added to the candidate list as a substance of very high concern (SVHC) and a proposal was made in 2018 to consider it a substance subject to authorisation (8th Recommendation for Inclusion in Annex XIV).
