1 Back in 2004, the EU Decopaint directive specified the permissible solvent contents of various products. In 2010, far stricter limit values - on average 10 % to 30 % - were imposed on each substance. This EU directive, together with growing end-consumer demand for environmentally friendly products, provides an incentive for paints and coatings manufacturers to seek out alternative raw materials. With polymeric binders being widely used to formulate architectural coatings, ecolabels play an important role in this area.
