Contrary to popular belief, the Statue Of Liberty was not painted on the outside. Finished in 1886, the New York landmark is coated in a layer of copper that, over time, has oxidated. EMBRACING GREEN When the change of colour became noticeable by the early 1900s, officials discussed a new paint job, which was reported by newspapers. But ultimately, it was decided not to repaint the statue.
