PPG lost the pole position of being the world's largest producer of paints and coatings when Sherwin-Williams announced the acquisition of Valspar in 2016. The transaction was closed during 2017 and put Sherwin-Williams on the top of that list. In that same year, PPG's failed to acquire Dutch rival Akzo Nobel.
