Packaging Indian researchers created a water-repellent paper coating by embedding silicone oil-laden nanosilica into a PMMA matrix. The formulation transforms waste paper and cellulose into waterproof, self-cleaning surfaces while maintaining recyclability. It offers a sustainable alternative to plastic-based packaging The coating exhibits excellent resistance to moisture and oil, with contact angles exceeding 140º, and remains effective even under mild abrasion. It retains the paper's flexibility and printability, making it ideal for short-life packaging such as food wraps, labels and shipping materials. The simple application method and use of abundant raw materials underline its potential for scalable, low-cost production. ...
