Cellulose derivatives, which are natural film formers, have been used in the paint industry for a very long time. From cellulose nitrate, traditionally called nitrocellulose (NC), through cellulose esters, to cellulose ethers, they constitute a wide group of raw materials for solvent- and water-borne paints. In some countries, nitrocellulose paints and varnishes based on variously esterified celluloses are still one of the basic coating materials used as a binder both in wood paints and varnishes (e.g. zapon lacquer) and in the automotive industry.
