EU Directive 2022/279 stipulates that the current exemption for the manufacture of mercury lamps "emitting light in the ultraviolet spectrum" will end on 24 February 2027. This affects all mediumpressure mercury lamps used for UV curing. If mercury medium-pressure lamps are to be replaced for UV curing while continuing to make full use of commercially available photoinitiators and existing coating and printing ink formulations, the radiation sources selected as an alternative should replicate both the spectrum and irradiance of mercury lamps, have similar lifespans, and use as little energy as possible.
