More recently, biorenewable monomers that can be copolymerised via free radical polymerisation were investigated by multiple research groups and companies [3-10]. Examples of such monomers are dialkyl itaconates and alkyl (meth)acrylates. Dialkyl itaconate monomers can be synthesised from bio-based itaconic acid and alcohols [11], resulting in fully bio-based monomers. Since biobased alternatives for acrylic and methacrylic acid do not yet exist on a commercial scale, bio-based (meth)acrylates exist only because their alcohol source is bio-based.
